Turn Around Norman, Ben Syversen Trio @ Windup Space–Wednesday, September 1, 9:30pm

Just a quick plug for a creative show in the Baltimore area. A great trumpet player and friend Ben Syversen is on tour with his trio featuring guitarist Xander Naylor and drummer Jeremy Gustin. Ben just released his first album with the trio called Cracked Vessel and it’s definitely worth checking out. A band I’m part of called Turn Around Norman is also playing. That band is made up of OOYH members Cam Collins-sax; JJ Wright-whirly; Adam Hopkins-bass; and Nathan Ellman-Bell-drums.

You can check out more of Ben’s stuff (and all of Cracked Vessel) at http://bensyversen.com/. More info on Turn Around Norman is available at http://weturnaround.com. T.A.N. also recently finished their debut album We Turn Around. Watch out for release date and upcoming tour info.

Sorry for the shameless plug for a show that I’m apart of…just wanted to make sure Ben has people out to check out his great music. Hope to see you there. Details:

Ideal Bread (NY) @ An Die Musik–Friday, July 30 8:00 & 9:30pm

Ideal Bread is a Steve Lacy repertory band, and they not only play the music well, they play it with the spirit of Lacy’s bands. For me, Steve Lacy is one of the jazz musicians whose compositions really haven’t received the attention they deserve. As great as his writing is you rarely hear a band play one of his tunes like you’d hear them play a Monk or Miles tune. Hopefully this will change in the coming years, but for now we have Ideal Bread holding it down.

The band is a quartet of Josh Sinton-bari sax; Kirk Knuffke-cornet; Rueben Radding-bass; and Tomas Fujiwara-drums. Unfortunately Reuben Radding can’t make the An Die gig, and I’m honored to have been asked to play. So yours truly will be covering the bass parts for this Baltimore performance. Rueben is a bassist whose work and playing I really admire, so I hope to do it justice. I would be at this show, for sure, if I weren’t playing so don’t take this post as a shameless plug.

Special Offer: If you mention OOYH, you get a discounted ticket for the second set at $10. Cheap! Here’s all the info:

Friday, July 30, 8 & 9:30 pm $ 15 / $ 10 students
IDEAL BREAD Steve Lacy Repertory Band
Josh Sinton, baritone sax
Kirk Knuffke, cornet
Thomas Fujiwara, drums
Adam Hopkins, bass
“The Ideal Bread lays down a serious marker for the posthumous evolution of Steve Lacy’s music.” – Point of Departure. The group’s recent CD “Transmit” has received 4.5 stars in the latest DownBeat magazine!
We are offering a special price of $ 10 for the 9:30 show to the members of the collective.

New Atlantis Festival–July 22, 25 in Bmore; 23-24 in DC

There is a huge festival for creative and improvised music happening in the Baltimore/DC area this weekend. Concerts will be happening Thursday July 22, and Sunday July 25 in Baltimore at our favorite venue, The Windup Space, presented by Bernard Lyons and Creative Differences. The festival will hit DC at Fridge on Friday July 23, and Saturday July 24. The lineup is great…a lot of musicians that would be must see if they came to Baltimore by themselves. But with everyone on the lineup, this is a should-not-miss event both on Thursday and Sunday in Baltimore. I’m excited to be closing Sunday’s AMAZING lineup with Quartet Offensive–Eric Trudel, John Dierker-reeds; Matt Frazao-guitar; Nathan Ellman-Bell-drums, playing a ton of new music. Here’s the full lineup for the Baltimore portion of the show (for DC’s lineup check out The Fridge’s website):

Big Thanks to AvantMusicNews.com

Just wanted to send thanks over to Mike at AvantMusicNews.com for continually covering the happenings of OOYH.  It’s by far one of my favorite websites to keep up to date with the creative music scenes ANYWHERE.  If you aren’t a follower, I highly recommend checking it out on a daily basis…he updates like crazy over there (way more then we do).
