Gone are the days when people used to visit each others home for a leisurely chat or a stroll in the park during evenings. A new study from Think box, the commercial television marketing association, claims to explain why live viewing satisfies all our television needs. This study suggests that the live television experience “satisfies human emotional needs that on demand viewing alone can’t”. The researchers were thinking out of their heads and found six main reasons that people watch television: to unwind, for comfort, to connect, for an experience, to escape, or to indulge.
The typical American spends about 4 hours and 51 minutes in front of a movies app on Android screen per day. And the reason is more or less relational. These shows pretty accurately reflect a very narrow subset of Americans, specifically the middle upper class. As for movies the scenarios is pretty much the same. Apart from the regular reasons of unwinding after a tough week, movies allow us to look past us and get an insight into a life that we may never really get to experience, by placing ourselves on the shoes of the characters on the movie being watched. Real life stories on the other hand allow us to witness the life of the person which was seldom known earlier and transpires us to a greater sense of thinking and awareness. The term “binge-watch,” was coined to describe continuous watching over longer periods of time. American’s love of television is well established, and has long been one of their most wildly popular national pastimes. But in recent years, there’s been a distinct shift in how they connect with the medium. That connection has grown so deep that many of them regularly find themselves spending hours, days and entire lost weekends taking in their favorite shows.
We make time for the things we love, and TV is among the dearest of those. Americans spent increasing hours at work last year, yet studies show they also managed to squeeze in more television watching. Given the option to watch television as our hectic modern schedules permit, we prove ourselves committed and voracious consumers.
