Thanks to everyone who made our two-year anniversary a success last night. The three sets were all great, and it was a pleasure to have Andrew come down to perform with the groups. As always an enormous thank you to Russell de O’Campo at the Windup Space who lets us do our thing there every Tuesday (and has for two straight years!) Thanks to Mat and Emily of NOVO…hope the rest of the festival is awesome. Thanks to Andrew and everyone else who played last night for throwing down. And another huge thanks to everyone in the collective for performing regularly, for free, week after week. It wouldn’t happen if we didn’t have an amazing pool of musicians who are committed to the cause. And a personal thanks to Matt for being so awesome to work with. And one more to the people who come out to support us by being in the audience week after week, and for the people who donated to the kickstarter cause. Woooo.
Upcoming stuff: The first podcast is complete! We’re just tweaking the sound, but it should be ready in a day or two. This will highlight the performances from January 2011, and February 2011 will be right on it’s tail. I’ll announce that again when it’s ready. Also, new schedule will be posted soon for the March/April Tuesday night shows at Windup. Thanks!

Nels Cline is currently my favorite guitar player. His band the Nels Cline Singers, which now includes Trevor Dunn (of Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, etc.) on bass in place of Devin Hoff, is the perfect mix of rock, jazz, and improvised freak-outs for my taste. It is really, really difficult to see Nels with this group due to his heavy touring schedule with the band Wilco, so I’m very excited to announce that Bernard Lyons of Creative Differences is bringing him to Baltimore this Sunday at the Windup Space. The concert will be a collaboration between the Singers and the ROVA Sax Quartet. This is the do-not-miss event of the year so far in Baltimore music. Speaking of don’t miss, don’t forget that we’re bringing Andrew D’Angelo to the Windup Space next Tuesday, March 1 for FREE to perform with the collective. An all-star AvantJazz suoergroup performs its final concert!
The distinguished avant-garde sax quartet ROVA joins forces with the wild free jazz trio Nels Cline Singers (in which nobody sings, in case you wonder) to perform The Celestial Septet.
Concerts by this all star group are rare (in part due to Nels Cline’s hectic schedule with Wilco). Tonight they finish off a 5 date U.S. tour with this exclusive area appearence. Fans of free-jazz,modern classical and out-rock should not miss this one! Advance tickets are advised.

It’s been too long since I’ve updated here, but there’s a lot of exciting stuff happening with the collective. Thanks to our generous fans and supporters we reached our Kickstarter goal (easily!) to fund the second installment of our Guest Artist Series on Tuesday March 1, which is also our Two-Year Anniversary, which also kicks off the week-long NOVO Fest at The Windup Space. Whoa. We’re really excited to be bringing alto saxophonist Andrew D’Angelo to Baltimore for the performance. He is without question one of my favorite improvisers from any scene anywhere today, and I can’t wait to hear him with the bands we put together of our collective members. That lineup is coming very soon…Matt and I are sitting down this week to hash out the details. We’re also putting the finishing touches on the first podcast which will feature excerpts from all of our January 2011 performances.
Also, we now have OOYH t-shirts. The order form is not functional yet, but with a tweak or two this week you’ll be able to order your very own OOYH t-shirt in standard or American Apparel. It bears our logo designed by local Baltimore artist Matt Bovie. A HUGE thank you to Leslie Craine (sister of OOYH superstar Blake Cramer) for helping us make this happen. She’s been awesome, and you should support her company Animal Right Stuff anytime you have t-shirt or printing needs.
Also new video posted in the Media section of the 1.25.11 performance featuring Mike Cerri-trumpet, pocket trumpet; Susan Alcorn-pedal steel guitar; Dustin Carlson-guitar; and Ethan Snyder-drums. Couldn’t wait to get this video up. This is the band from last night’s OOYH featuring John Dierker-reeds; Matt Frazao-guitar; Will Redman-drums. John Dierker was stepping in last minute for Colin Renick, who’s whole family was sick. They were on it for pretty much the whole night, and the video is just a small representation of that. You can see the video (three clips) in the Media section or go straight HERE. Sound quality isn’t awesome because I only have an iPhone, but the spirit is awesome. Punk rock.
