“Originally from West Hartford, Conn., Matt Frazao moved to Baltimore to attend The Peabody Conservatory, where he earned a degree in classical guitar performance. At the start of 2009, he co-founded the Out of Your Head music collective with bassist Adam Hopkins to help expand the creative music scene in Baltimore. Frazao, 31, now co-curates the series with Jon Birkholz, arranging for groups of musicians who have never rehearsed or played together before to perform sets of improvised, original music. Along the way, Frazao has been playing and recording with several other bands including Soul Cannon, Quartet Offensive and many more. This week, the Baltimore musician talks to b about wobble bass, delicious sandwiches and more.

Worst pet peeve? Noodlers in rehearsal

What’s on your iPod? An absurd amount of music. Lately I’ve been listening a lot to Whoarfrost’s new album, Turn Around Norman’s new album and Yeveto’s new album. Also James Blake.

What song are you hating/loving right now? I’ve hadOrnette Coleman‘s tune “Peace’” stuck in my head for around six months. That one.

Last concert you went to? Little Women, Deradoorian, Susan Alcorn at The Windup Space. It was great.

Your worst habit? Forgetting to eat when I’m working on something

Trend that has exceeded its natural lifespan? Wobble bass. Wob wob wob wobwobwobwobwobwob. Never die, wobble bass … never die.

Favorite band? Soul Cannon and Quartet Offensive, but I’m admittedly biased as a member of both.

Favorite instrument? The ondes Martenot [an electronic instrument with a theremin-like sound]

Last movie you liked/disliked? “Cat Soup.” It was a bizarre animated Japanese short that made me feel good about my body.

TV shows you can’t get enough of? “Louie,” “Breaking Bad”

Favorite book you recently read? “Autobiography of Mark Twain”

Last great meal you had? The Nick-Mechen at Bolton Deli. It’s an improvised sandwich … Always a surprise, never a let down.

Food you hate? Endives. Duck blood soup is also pretty gross.

Favorite place to get a drink? The Windup Space.

Favorite quote/saying? “Nothing is true, everything is permitted,” [attributed to] Hassan-i Sabbah

Source of inspiration? The present moment

Favorite thing about Baltimore? The genuine nature of the people who live here

AS TOLD TO LAURA LEFAVOR, B

If you go

What: Out of Your Head collective

When: 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays

Creative Differences presents a rare meeting of two masters of jazz and multicultural music forms. This is no limp fusion project..its the real deal and should not be missed! Lafayette Gilchrist will open the evening with a set of piano improvisations.

Adam Rudolph and Joseph Bowie first performed together with Yusef Lateef at Lincoln Center in 2000. Since then they have collaborated in numerous projects, including a trio with Omar Sosa and most recently, in Rudolph’s Moving Pictures Ensemble. Their music is grounded in the American improvisational tradition while embracing languages, instrumentation, and cosmologies of Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the African Diaspora. Decades of performance and research into these music cultures have given them the tools to create unique improvisations.

“A project of haunting power and beauty. Captivating and profoundly beautiful.” – Philadelphia Daily News

ADAM RUDOLPH – Born in 1955, hand drummer, composer and improviser Adam Rudolph has been hailed as “a pioneer in world music” by the New York Times. Currently he composes for his group Adam Rudolph’s Moving Pictures Organic Orchestra, a 15 – 50 piece ensemble for which he has developed an original music notation and conducting system. He has performed at festivals and concerts throughout the world and has recorded with Jon Hassel, L. Shankar, Muhal Richard Abrams, Fred Anderson, Hassan Hakmoun, Sam Rivers, Pharaoh Sanders and Wadada Leo Smith among others. He has released over a dozen recordings on his own Meta Records label.

JOSEPH BOWIE – Born in St. Louis in 1953, trombonist and percussionist Joseph Bowie is the younger brother of saxophonist Byron and trumpeter Lester Bowie. He was a member of the hugely influential St. Louis-based Black Artists Group, and performed and recorded with all its principals: Oliver Lake, Julius Hemphill, Baikida Carroll and Charles ‘Bobo’ Shaw.He formed his famed jazz/funk band Defunkt in the late 1970s, served as musical director for vocalist Fontella Bass, and continues to make genre-bending music with David Murray, Jean-Paul Bourelly, and the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. Bowie has lived in Holland since 2003.

For the past five years they’ve presented music under the title Exotic Hipnotic in the University of Baltimore Student Center (5th floor). The concept is the same this year but the name has changed to Worlds In Collusion. It is, in my opinion, one of THE things to check out at Artscape, and it doesn’t hurt that the Student Center is air conditioned. So get out of the heat and check out something a little different. Full lineup:

We have a special performance this coming Tuesday, May 10…trying something a little bit different for the night. A great band called Father Figures is coming through Baltimore on tour, and it worked out for them to join us on a Tuesday night. They have a full set of their own music (which is definitely worth checking out) so they’re playing that at 8:00pm then OOYH will proceed as normal at 9:30pm. But we’ll be splitting up their band and mixing in some of our favorite Baltimore musicians to stay true to the idea of OOYH. Should be great. It’s all FREE so come at 8:00pm and stay until it’s over…as always this occurs at The Windup Space (12 W North Ave) Schedule for the night and more info about Father Figures:

Tuesday, May 10 @ The Windup Space

8:00pm–Father Figures

9:30pm–Adam Schatz, Jas Walton-saxophones; Jon Lipscomb-guitar; Nathan Ellman-Bell-drums

11:00pm–John Dierker-reeds; Ross Edwards-rhodes; Spencer Zahn-bass; Ian Chang-drums

Father Figures is a band of five friends from Brooklyn, making music that blends the composed and improvised into something that is wild, yet accessible. It is Zombie Jazz, and it is not your grandfather’s music… unless your grandfather juggled knives. Always melodic and strong willed, Father Figures manages sounds into sculptures to make you move your feet, then break a vase, and can neatly package these sounds into a 30 minute set ideal for a dirty basement, or an hour long set ideal for a slightly cleaner warehouse. But they’ll actually play anywhere, and won’t be stopped.

After meeting at NYU, Father Figures studied with instrumental monsters Ralph Alessi, Dave Pietro & Wayne Krantz to help develop their approach to collective improvisation and build a rock solid group sound as a foundation for creative composition from every band member. As a listener, it will be unclear what is improvised and what is not, and that mystery is what carries Father Figures live performance to new heights.

Father Figures is:

Adam Schatz (tenor sax, effects)
Jas Walton (tenor sax)
Ross Edwards (keys)
Spencer Zahn (bass)
Ian Chang (drums)

Another great show coming to Baltimore at our favorite venue The Windup Space on Wednesday April 27. This one is extra exciting for me because Party Pack! is a trio I am a part of with Dustin Carlson-guitar, and Nathan Ellman-Bell-drums. We don’t get to play very often since Dustin lives in NY, but he’ll be performing with Will McEvoy’s Mutasm so Party Pack! gets in on the fun as well.

Will writes amazing music, and his semi-large ensemble is made up of some of my favorite NY (and not NY) based musicians. The group is Will McEvoy-bass; Nathaniel Morgan-alto; Patrick Breiner-tenor; Brad Henkl-trumpet; Dustin Carlson-guitar; Cody Brown-drums. If you missed them last time they were in town, I highly recommend checking them out at this show. You can hear some clips on this website, but they don’t quite compare to the live show. You want to see this.

Party Pack! is a trio of Dustin Carlson-guitar; Adam Hopkins-bass; and Nathan Ellman-Bell-drums. We are pretty much a rock band…but there is a lot of improvisation and really open sections, so you can call it whatever you want. It is always a party, though…we promise. I’ve attached a video of PP opening for the Oxes last year, which was filmed at our first public performance. Lineup for the night is roughly:

9:30pm–Nathan Bell

10:30pm–Mutasm

11:30pm–Party Pack!

Wednesday April 27, Windup Space, 12 W North Ave, Baltimore MD
