OOYH BK Full Schedule May-August!!!

The first cycle of the new OOYH BK chapter was a huge success. Great music, great crowds, all around good times had by all. We’re back with the second round of scheduling which takes us through August 2012. The OOYH BK series runs slightly differently than the Bmore chapter for a couple of reasons. The two main differences: 1) OOYH BK is every first and third Sunday (instead of every Tuesday as it is in Bmore) 2) and the bands are different for first and second set in BK. Other than those two differences the model, idea, basis is the same: Awesome bands of improvisers who have never played together as a unit. It’s been amazing.

This cycle of OOYH BK was co-curated by my good friend and great guitarist/improviser Dustin Carlson. He created some ridiculous groups, and I loved having him as part of the process. OOYH BK is every first and third Sunday at Freddy’s Bar (freddysbar.com) 627 5th Ave in South Slope, two sets at 9:30p and 11:00p, and No Cover! Hope to see you out!

Sinton/Grollman/Rosenberg @ OOYH BK 4.29.12

Here’s an update on what’s been happening at OOYH BK. The series has been running strong every 1st and 3rd Sunday at Freddy’s Bar in South Slope. We’ve just completed our first cycle, and are in the process of scheduling the next round which will run May/June/July/August.

We had a special performance this past Sunday (NOT a 1st or 3rd Sunday, but actually a 5th Sunday) since we won’t be at Freddy’s Bar on May 6 due to a conflict. The night featured Josh Sinton on bass clarinet, Ed Rosenberg on tenor sax, and David Grollman on snare drum and more. We varied the format for this one, having each musician play a short solo set and then they played together as a trio to close the night. ALL the sets were great, and the two trio pieces were among the most satisfying musical experiences in this guy’s recent memory. I’ve posted the whole night below (provided courtesy of OOYH veteran Danny Gouker). They are in chronological order, so it’ll be just like you were there even if you weren’t. Enjoy!

Out of Your Head BK 3.4.12–Sights and Sounds

We had our second installment of OOYH BK, and like the kickoff show it was an inspiring night of music all around. The great saxophonist Tony Malaby joined in for the first set, which made for a pretty ridiculous front line of saxophone players! Here are two clips, one from each set for your viewing pleasure…some beautiful music in here. Thanks to all who played, and to all who attended. Really excited about the expansion and future of OOYH.

Super sad to not be making it back to Baltimore for the 3rd Anniversary show. Matt and Jon have a great night of music lined up that is sure to not disappoint. I’ll be wishing I was there!

The bands from last night were:

Set One: Tony Malaby, Patrick Breiner, Ed Rosenberg-saxophones; Simon Jermyn-electric bass; Flin van Hemmen-drums

Set Two: Adam Schatz-sax, electronics; Kirk Knuffke-cornet; Shannon Barnett-trombone; Will McEvoy-bass; Tim Kuhl-drums

Some more video…

Thanks to Daniela Mileykovsky we have some more video of the Brooklyn Kickoff show that looks a whole lot better than what I shot on my phone. More to come from this weekends show. Big thanks to Daniela for these! Some special moments in here…both of the short clips especially. Enjoy!

OOYH BK Kickoff @ Freddy’s Bar 2.19.12!!!

I’m very excited to say that the kickoff show for OOYH Brooklyn was a huge success.  Two really amazing bands, an awesome crowd, and a really great hang for the whole night.  If you’ve been to an OOYH performance you know that the hang is a major part of it!  I got a lot of positive feedback from musicians involved in the collective and from also from people who had no idea what OOYH was prior to this night.  I’m already looking forward to the next performance on March 4.

Huge thank you, props, etc to the nine musicians who played (and sounded amazing), to Matt Frazao, Jon Birkholz, Daniela Mileykovsky, and Dan Ryan for making the trip up from Baltimore just for this show, for the 50+ people in the audience, and to Freddy’s Bar for hosting us. Excited that the energy and enthusiasm that’s always been part of the Baltimore OOYH is present up here as well.

Below are some videos I took on my iPhone. Daniela shot video as well, and as expected it looks WAY better than mine.  She’s doing a documentary on the whole OOYH thing, and I can’t wait to see everything she’s shot. The first band was a quartet of Nathaniel Morgan-alto, Josh Sinton-low reeds, Jonathan Goldberger-guitar, and Kate Pittman-drums. Second set was Timo Volbrecht-reeds, Rick Parker-trombone, Dustin Carlson-guitar, Landon Knoblock-rhodes, and Devin Gray-drums. The biggest difference between the two chapters of OOYH is that, since Bmore is a weekly event, the night is only one band and both sets are the same group. It always leads to awesome things after the band has taken a break, had a beer (or soda!) and talked a little bit. We had to change the format for the BK chapter 1) since we’re only meeting twice a month and 2) because there are already 80+ musicians who want to be involved.  So I was a little worried that we’d lose some of the second set energy. I can say without hesitation that both of these bands abolished that worry…they got right in there right off the bat. Here’s a link to the audio for both full sets (thanks again, Daniela) and below that are a few videos. Enjoy, and I hope to see you on March 4 at Freddy’s!
